Who knew Tayler Scott was the first South African to be drafted into professional baseball?
Tayler James Scott was born and raised in Roodepoort, Johannesburg. In 2008, at the age of 16, he moved to Arizona in the USA to complete his studies and pursue his dreams of becoming a professional baseball pitcher.
And, pursue his dreams he did! In 2011 Tayler became the first South African to play professional baseball and in 2019 he became the first South African to pitch in major league baseball.
This year, he became the first South African ever to play professional baseball in Japan after signing a contract pitching for the Hiroshima Toyo Carp.
He still visits his family in SA every other year for Christmas.
