It’s official, Port Elizabeth is now called Gqeberha and South Africans are battling to pronounce it.
Gqeberha is the isiXhosa name for Walmer Township, one of the first and oldest Port Elizabeth townships.
Nathi Mthetwa, Arts and Culture minister announced a number of other name changes in the Eastern Cape including Uitenhage which will now be known as Kariega.

In 2018, South African Chef Jean Delport moved to the UK to open Restaurant Interlude in Leonardslee Gardens, West Sussex. Within 10 months of opening, he became the second-ever South African born chef to receive a Michelin Star.
In January 2021, the UK and Ireland 2021 Michelin Guide announced that Restaurant Interlude will retain its Michelin star.
Chef Jean Delport met Interlude owner Penny Streeter OBE at her Somerset West restaurant in the Cape Winelands, Benguela on Main, where he worked for several years.
His sous-chef, Ruan Pretorius, is also from South Africa having worked at Restaurant Terroir at Kleine Zalze.

On the 28th of February, Prime Circle will be performing a show the likes of which we have never seen before. Live from the TicketPro Dome in Johannesburg, Music in Empty Spaces is a 90-minute global streaming event with all of your Prime Circle songs, big prizes and an even bigger production.
The TicketPro Dome in Joburg holds a special place for the band, it’s the venue where they performed some 18 years ago as the opening act for the band +Live+ on their “Birds of prey tour”, a gig that launched them into stardom.
Siya Kolisi has chosen not to re-sign with WPRU and it’s rumoured he will move to the Sharks in Durban. Although the World Cup-winning Springbok captain’s contract with the Western Province Rugby Union was due to end in October 2021 he has been released early from his contract.
His wife, Rachel took to social media with a heartfelt message.
“I can’t believe I’m even doing this post. My heart is so heavy💔
I have been a Stormer since I discovered my love for the game. From once only being able to afford the R50 standing tickets to watching games in fancy boxes and lounges, to have my children run on the beloved Newlands field after every game, how crazy life can be.
Every injury, every loss, every victory, every sacrifice, every memory the many tears, and many laughs I will cherish them all. Because we learnt from the bad and hold close the good.
It has been a tough season for us personally, having to make really big and hard decisions, but change is always inevitable.
In all of this, one thing I have been reminded of. Siya’s character is like no one else I’ve ever known. He remained kind and respectful in moments he had every reason not to. He has lead this team in more ways than some will ever know. He has been a mentor, and listener, he has paved a path for the many that will follow. I can’t put into words how proud I am of him.
This team not only brought us beautiful memories but friends who became family.
A big piece of our hearts will remain with the faithful.

South Africa rugby captain Siya Kolisi is more motivated than ever to ‘start fresh’ in 2021 and is focusing on new ways of motivating himself to continue performing at the highest of levels.
After captaining his country to 2019 Rugby World Cup success in Japan, the flanker from Port Elizabeth has endured a difficult start to the year with his DHL Western Province team suffering a 19-9 defeat to the Natal Sharks in the last-ever rugby game at the club’s iconic Newlands stadium.
He explained: “For me, personally, transitioning back on the field hasn’t been easy, we’ve carried over a lot of feeling and uncertainty from 2020. The last game at Newlands was supposed to be a big, special game and we were supposed to deliver. We obviously wanted to achieve so much more.”
However the 29-year-old, who returned to the line-up after two weeks on the sidelines, is now targeting a return to form at club and country level after adopting a new mindset.
He added: “It’s been tough, but now I’m looking to start fresh. It’s a whole new year. It has to start first in your mind, and you’ve got to tell yourself, ‘Whatever has gone in the past, it is gone, it is done. I’m focusing on something new,’ and find other ways of getting yourself up. That’s what I’m looking towards with my family as well. I’m telling my kids, ‘It is going to be a different year no matter how, even if it is one small thing’.”
Kolisi knows a thing or two about battling through obstacles after he defied the odds at every step on his journey from the township to become a World Cup-winning captain with the final win over England.
He revealed: “I’m the type of player that needs consistency. I need to be playing game-in-game-out to find my flow and really hit my best, and that is absolutely the ambition.”
