The 24th of September was known as Shaka Day in commemoration of Shaka, the Zulu King. Every year people gather at the Shaka Memorial to honour him. When the Public Holidays Bill was presented to the post-ApartheidParliament of South Africa in 1996 it did not include 24th September as a proposed public holiday. The Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) objected to the bill and then reached a compromise and the day was given its present title and accepted as a public holiday now known as Heritage Day and to some Braai Day.
