Who knew you can pick your own gem squash right here in the UK? And for only £1.50 a kg. A lot of the Saffa shops do sell them occasionally in season but generally, they are hard to come by.
Many South Africans have tried to grow their own, some with little success as the UK climate is not fantastic for this gem to flourish.
If you live in Surrey you can pay a visit to Garsons in Esher and Pick Your Own (PYO) veg, one of the largest of its kind in the UK. It is an award-winning Garden Centre and Farm Shop that also has another branch in Titchfield, Hampshire, although there is no PYO here.
You will need a ‘Farm Pass’ to enter the farm that must be booked in advance online. An adult pass is £4, children pay £2.
