Gordon Ramsay in KZN, South Africa

Gordon Ramsay’s National Geographic series: Uncharted was released in June 2020. In the series, he cooks around the globe while discovering new flavours and foods.

In Season 2 he heads to Durban, KZN to learn more about the traditional food and diverse culture of the area.

He cooks for a Zulu Chief, learns how to braai and picks mussels amongst other exciting adventures.

A visit to an Indian/Afro spice shop had the enthusiastic owner mixing him up a special “slightly spicy, skop and donner” mix. (26.19 seconds in)

She also suggests Gordon try the “Mother In Law Exterminator” which proved to be slightly too hot. “Why did you do that to me? Holy Mackerel!”

Herschelle Gibbs new head coach of Pakistan Super League

Herschelle Gibbs, former South African cricketer was recently appointed as the head coach of the Pakistan Super League (PSL), Karachi Kings.

Gibbs has enjoyed a fine career with 90 Tests, 248 ODIs and 23 T20Is for South Africa between 1996 and 2010.

In December 2020, he was coaching the Sri Lanka Premier League side, Colombo Kings, however, he resigned and returned to South Africa as both his mother and brother had been hospitalised with Covid-19.

Sadly just before Christmas Gibbs posted on social media that his mother had passed away.

In this new six-part series for ITV, Gregg Wallace explores South Africa’s most iconic and best-loved landscapes and experiences – along with its glorious food.

The culinary expert visits six key destinations on his tour – he goes on safari in Amakhala, visits Cape Town, Augrabies Falls in the Kalahari Desert, the Whale Coast, Soweto in Johannesburg and the Garden Province – aiming to get a taste of the real South Africa.

Gregg discovers the flavours this diverse country has to offer – from the wine lands in the Cape to an Afrikaans braai in the Kalahari desert. Soweto’s street food stalls selling fat cakes, and traditional hearty dishes like bobotie. 

Gregg also discovers South Africa’s famous wildlife – coming face to face with sharks and helping care for wild leopards and African penguins – and immerses himself in the country’s rich culture and tradition, new and old, as he journeys across the nation to gain a vivid insight into the country.

This is a Tin Can Island production for ITV and starts on Tuesday 05 Jan 2021 at 7.30 pm.

Dr Taban saves Covid-19 patients in SA with new procedure

South Sudanese born pulmonologist, Dr. Emmanuel Taban is saving the lives of critically-ill COVID-19 patients in South Africa with his novel use of therapeutic bronchoscopies.

While Dr. Taban was treating Covid-19 patients in ICU he became intrigued as to why certain patients who initially responded well to ventilation deteriorated after a few days.

He decided to perform a bronchoscopy to see what was going on in the lungs and found several mucous plugs that were the cause of blocked airways, he decided to remove them resulting in oxygen levels returning to normal and speedy recovery of patients.

Dr. Taban is the first in the world to try this procedure and has published a study on his findings of this new technique.

Easy Romany Creams

What a biscuit! Who can resist the legendary Romany Cream? There are so many variations to this truly South African recipe but this one is super simple and uncomplicated.

Ingredients
250g butter, softened
1 cup white sugar
1 ½ cups desiccated coconut
1 cup cornflakes, crushed
2 cups cake flour
1 tsp baking powder
3 tbsp cocoa powder
A pinch of salt
150g milk or dark chocolate

Serves 20

Preheat the oven to 180°C.

Cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add the sifted dry ingredients and crushed cornflakes and mix until you form a soft dough.

Roll tablespoonfuls of the mixture into balls then place on a lined baking tray and flatten them into rounds using the back of a fork.
Scratch the surface of the biscuits with a fork to create a rough texture.

Bake in a preheated oven at 180°C for 10-12 minutes or until firm.
Allow to cool then sandwich the biscuits together using the melted chocolate.

Store in an airtight container for up to 2 weeks.

Services at the South African Home affairs at Whitehall have resumed although now strictly by appointment.

In order to minimize the number of people visiting the office, and to keep everyone safe, postal applications are encouraged, especially for child passport applications.

Step 1: Download guidelines and application forms using the following link. https://southafricahouse.uk/home-affairs/civic-services/

Step 2: Complete all forms received and prepare your supporting documents per guidelines.

Step 3: Send your request for an appointment to: Civic.appointments@dirco.gov.za
The request must include full names and ID number of the applicant as well as the type of service required.

POSTAL APPLICATIONS
Step 1: Download guidelines and application forms using the link https://southafricahouse.uk/home-affairs/civic-services/

Request additional application forms (forms with unique bar code) by sending an A4 Self -addressed pre-paid (1st class Large stamp) envelope (per applicant) with a note stating the forms required and the age of the applicant.

NB: Royal Mail: If the postage stamp on the envelope is insufficient or the envelope is the wrong size, the forms will NOT be mailed to you.

Step 2:
Fully complete all forms received and prepare your supporting documents per guidelines received.
