Run the Cape Town Marathon in the UK

The annual Sanlam Cape Town Marathon takes place on 18th October 2020. This year due to COVID restrictions it is not possible for the full event to take place but organisers have found a way to ensure the race continues via a virtual race. That means, wherever you are in the world, you can download the app and participate.

The Sanlam Cape Town Virtual Marathon will offer an interactive and immersive race experience for athletes across the globe by superimposing the race route on top of streets, open spaces and gardens, complete with live tracking, distance markers, and push messages with information about key landmarks as they are passed.

There will however still be a few elite runners and a few wild cards running at 3 locations across South Africa namely Cape Town, Pretoria and Potchefstroom who will run a lap course to complete the 42 km marathon. On average 12 – 16 athletes at each location.

SABC will be broadcasting the virtual race with most of the focus on Cape Town as the original host city and where the opening ceremony will still be held.

Choose from the 42km virtual marathon, 21km half marathon or the 5 / 10km virtual peace run.

Shosholoza was sung by the mixed tribes of miners mining gold in South Africa. This traditional song is often referred to as the second National Anthem. Originally the song is mix of Ndebele and Zulu, although other South African languages are sometimes incorporated depending on the artist.

List of countries that can’t visit South Africa

Travellers from all African countries are allowed to visit South Africa however, leisure travellers from 60 high-risk countries will not yet be permitted to travel to South Africa. Countries will be assessed every fortnight.

The following list was announced by Home Affairs Minister, Dr Aaron Motsoaledi and published on the government’s news website.

“All travellers visiting the country will be expected to abide by the regulations which include mandatory wearing of masks at all times, practising social distancing in public spaces, regular washing or sanitizing of hands and presenting a negative COVID-19 test result not older than 72 hours from the time of departure.” – DIRCO Minister Pandor

The exception for travellers from high-risk countries will be business travellers with scarce and critical skills, including diplomats, repatriated persons, investors and people participating in professional sporting and cultural events.

Those needing to get to SA urgently could fly via a non-banned country and spend 10 days there before flying to SA.

Moving to the UK with Pets

This is quite a contentious subject in many groups. Some people feel that the expense of moving a pet is unattainable, others believe that there is really no choice to be made.

We fall into the latter category. When we moved, we brought four elderly pets. They were interwoven into the fabric of our family and there was no way that we would abandon them. We understand that this is not an option for everyone, but we would like to help you if you make the decision to bring them with.

Quarantine
One of the great things about moving your pets to the UK is that there is no quarantine period. You simply fetch them from the airport and take them to their new home. However, if you do not follow all the rules your pet could be quarantined for up to four months or worse.

Time frame
This is the difficult part; it is not a quick process. Your pet will need to have an up to date rabies test and a three-month wait before they can enter the UK. As soon as you have the results of the blood test you can make arrangements.

Contacting a professional
While it is a costly endeavour, it is worth getting a professional company to assist you. They will provide all the necessary information as well as large crates that your pet can travel in. They will collect them from your home and deliver them to you at the airport in the UK. Make sure that you are using an approved transport company and route.

What do you need to know?
• Your pet needs to arrive no more than 5 days before or after you.
• Your pet needs the following before they can travel:
They have to be microchipped
They will need a commercial health certificate if they are flying unaccompanied
They need to be vaccinated against rabies and have a Rabies Titre test at least 3 calendar months (92 days) before travel
Valid vaccinations (5 in1 for Dogs; 3 in1 for Cats) over 30 days, less than 12 months
They need to have a tapeworm treatment

Make sure that your pet is not on the banned dog list before you plan to bring them into the country.

Cost
This greatly varies on the size of your pet. However, you can expect to pay around R20 000 per pet.

Cape Town could face another Earthquake

Cape Town could face another Earthquake

Prof Andrzej Kijko, an expert in seismology believes Cape Town could experience another earthquake and in the near future.

He predicts this one will be on a bigger scale than last weeks 6.2 magnitude earthquake that struck ±1600 km south-east of South Africa. Kijko estimates potential damages from a larger earthquake could cost structural insurance companies around R10 billion. A quake like this would seriously affect the Mother City.

“While we cannot say exactly when an earthquake will occur in Cape Town, what we can say is that once an earthquake happens in a particular area it will happen again at a similar magnitude, It’s only a question of when. – Kijko.

Prof Andrzej Kijko is the Director of the University of Pretoria Natural Hazard Centre, Africa at the University of Pretoria. As an internationally acclaimed researcher, he has been active in engineering geophysics and seismology for over 36 years.

Plastic Straw Ban in England

A whopping estimated 4.7 billion plastic straws are used by Brits each year. Add another 316 million plastic stirrers and 1.8 billion plastic-stemmed cotton buds to that and the figures are staggering.

Thankfully, it is now illegal for businesses in England to sell or supply single-use plastic straws, stirrers and cotton buds.

An exemption will allow restaurants, bars and medical facilities to provide plastic straws to those with disabilities or medical conditions.

The commencement of the ban will further ensure the country builds back greener.
